Phase III Cardiovascular SC-COBRE
The thematic scientific focus of the “South Carolina Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (SC COBRE) for Developmentally Based Cardiovascular Diseases” is to elucidate the developmental mechanisms underlying the etiology of congenital heart disease and adult cardiovascular diseases.
In Phase I and II, the primary goal of the “Cardiovascular SC-COBRE” was to develop a critical mass of new investigators with interests in cardiovascular development and to mentor them to competitiveness for NIH and other federal or private funding. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has recently awarded a P30 grant in the amount of $1,098,000 to support the third phase of this grant (Award Number P30GM103342). The Phase III grant specifically supports the infrastructure of the Research Cores that were developed during these first 10 years of COBRE funding and allows continued mentoring of COBRE-associated junior faculty.
The “Cardiovascular SC-COBRE” is intimately associated with the “Cardiovascular Developmental Biology Center (CDBC)” and forms an integral part of the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). The COBRE/CDBC is an internationally recognized, collaborative center with exclusive strength in developmentally-related, cardiovascular diseases. Research within the COBRE/CDBC is focused on understanding mechanisms of normal and abnormal heart and vascular development, investigating the developmental basis of adult cardiovascular diseases, and on applying the principles of normal cardiovascular developmental biology to regenerative medicine and stem cell-based tissue engineering.
