Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication
Research Experience for Undergraduates
Overview
The MUSC Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication is a 10-week summer research internship running from May 28 to August 2, 2013. Funded via a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the program will provide laboratory research training in tissue engineering and biofabrication fields. Participants will conduct a research project at MUSC under the supervision of one of MUSC¹s biofabrication Thrust Leaders. In addition to research projects, students will take part in a variety of educational activities designed to enrich the overall training experience. Stipends ($4000) and dormitory housing are included. General information, eligibility, and housing information can be found at MUSC’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program website.

Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication at MUSC
MUSC is part of a statewide NSF-funded initiative to develop tissue biofabrication methods that may ultimately be used for production of human organs. Studies at MUSC focus on generating blood vessels through a ‘bioprinting’ mechanism that prints 3D structures from living cellular building blocks. This involves several research ‘Thrusts’ that span bioengineering, cell biological, molecular biological and regenerative medicine fields. Studies are conducted through MUSC’s Advanced Tissue Fabrication Center, which houses the Palmetto Printer (bioprinter), bioreactors, biomechanical testing instrumentation, and cell culture facilities.

Eligibility and Application Procedure
Applications will be accepted through mid February. Applicants should be SC residents and/or enrolled in a SC undergraduate institution. Prior lab experience would be helpful but is not required. Applications should be made through the Summer Undergraduate Research Program application Portal.
